General Overview: The IT Director is responsible for the strategy, security, reliability, and day-to-day operation of the company’s technology infrastructure. This hands-on leadership role ensures that internal systems, cloud infrastructure, networks, security controls, business continuity, and technology vendors effectively support employees, products, customers, and long-term business objectives.

The IT Director develops and executes technology strategies aligned with the company’s strategic plan while maintaining secure, reliable, scalable, and cost-effective systems. The position leads and manages the Information Technology team while remaining actively involved in technical operations, troubleshooting, implementation, and problem resolution.

The IT Director oversees the acquisition, implementation, integration, documentation, maintenance, and lifecycle management of technology infrastructure, hardware, software, and third-party services. The position works closely with the Director of Software Product Development and other departments where infrastructure, production systems, security, data, and company-developed applications intersect.

Responsibilities

IT Strategy & Leadership

  • Develop and maintain the company’s long-term IT strategy and technology roadmap.
  • Identify and implement technology solutions and processes that improve security, reliability, productivity, efficiency, and customer service.
  • Lead, manage, mentor, and develop IT staff.
  • Establish IT priorities and manage projects, resources, timelines, and departmental workload.
  • Develop and manage annual IT operating and capital budgets.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and recommend solutions appropriate for the company.
  • Communicate significant technology initiatives, risks, system issues, cybersecurity concerns, and recommendations to executive leadership.

Infrastructure & Technology Operations

  • Oversee the operation, maintenance, performance, availability, and security of networks, servers, cloud environments, endpoints, communications systems, and other technology infrastructure.
  • Maintain reliable and scalable infrastructure supporting SaaS products, employees, customers, and business operations.
  • Provide hands-on technical support and escalation for complex technology issues.
  • Monitor infrastructure performance, capacity, availability, and system health.
  • Oversee technology upgrades, migrations, replacements, integrations, and infrastructure projects.
  • Maintain accurate inventories and lifecycle plans for hardware, software, licenses, accounts, domains, certificates, and other technology assets.
  • Ensure critical technology resources and administrative accounts remain under appropriate company ownership and control.

Cybersecurity & Risk Management

  • Develop, implement, maintain, and periodically review cybersecurity strategies, policies, procedures, standards, and controls.
  • Ensure systems and networks follow appropriate security practices and applicable regulatory, contractual, and customer requirements.
  • Oversee identity and access management, privileged access, multi-factor authentication, password policies, and access reviews.
  • Manage technology-related employee onboarding, role changes, and offboarding, including account provisioning, equipment, permissions, and access.
  • Oversee vulnerability management, security patching, endpoint protection, monitoring, logging, and other cybersecurity controls.
  • Evaluate the technology environment for security vulnerabilities and operational risks and develop remediation plans.
  • Lead responses to cybersecurity incidents, data loss events, system compromises, and other significant technology incidents.
  • Coordinate employee cybersecurity awareness and training.
  • Support customer, partner, and vendor security questionnaires, audits, due diligence, and contractual security requirements.

Business Continuity & Disaster Recovery

  • Develop, document, maintain, and periodically test business continuity and disaster recovery plans.
  • Establish and maintain backup and recovery procedures for critical systems and data.
  • Define recovery priorities, objectives, system dependencies, and responsibilities for critical systems.
  • Conduct recovery testing to verify backups and restoration procedures function as intended.
  • Identify technology-related single points of failure and develop plans to reduce business continuity risks.
  • Ensure documentation and procedures allow critical IT operations to continue in the absence of individual employees or vendors.

Documentation & IT Governance

  • Maintain comprehensive documentation of the technology environment, including infrastructure diagrams, configurations, administrative procedures, vendor information, licensing, backup and recovery procedures, and security processes.
  • Ensure IT documentation is maintained in secure, centralized, company-controlled systems and is accessible to appropriate personnel.
  • Develop and maintain IT policies, standards, operating procedures, and technology-related employee policies.
  • Maintain records of system changes, configurations, incidents, technology assets, and administrative responsibilities.
  • Periodically review IT processes and controls for improvement and risk reduction.

Vendor & Third-Party Management

  • Evaluate, select, and manage technology vendors and service providers.
  • Manage technology contracts, software licensing, subscriptions, renewals, service agreements, and vendor relationships.
  • Monitor vendor performance, service levels, costs, security practices, and business continuity risks.
  • Maintain an inventory of critical third-party technology providers and understand contingency options for service disruptions.
  • Participate in vendor negotiations and purchasing decisions to ensure appropriate value, functionality, security, and reliability.

Collaboration with Software Product Development

  • Partner with the Director of Software Product Development on infrastructure, cybersecurity, deployment, availability, data management, monitoring, and related areas.
  • Establish clear responsibilities between IT and Software Product Development for production environments, infrastructure, applications, databases, security, monitoring, backup, and incident response.
  • Assist with infrastructure requirements for new products, services, integrations, and customer implementations.
  • Support secure, reliable, and scalable environments for SaaS products.
  • Participate in planning and response activities for incidents affecting customer-facing products or services.

Incident & Service Management

  • Lead or coordinate responses to significant technology outages and service disruptions.
  • Establish appropriate escalation and communication procedures for technology incidents.
  • Coordinate with internal departments, vendors, and Software Product Development during significant incidents.
  • Conduct post-incident reviews and identify corrective and preventive actions.
  • Track recurring technology issues and implement solutions that address root causes.
  • Participate in critical after-hours technology incident response when necessary.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Five to ten years of progressively responsible IT experience, including infrastructure, systems, networks, cybersecurity, or related areas.
  • Demonstrated experience leading IT operations and technology projects.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Information Systems, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Working knowledge of network administration, cloud technologies, cybersecurity, identity and access management, endpoint management, backup and recovery, and business continuity.
  • Experience managing technology vendors, software licensing, contracts, and technology budgets.
  • Strong troubleshooting, analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple responsibilities in a small-company environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to create and maintain technical documentation, policies, and procedures.
  • Ability and willingness to perform hands-on technical work in addition to leadership and strategic responsibilities.

Preferred:

  • Experience in a SaaS, software, technology, broadcast technology, or other technology-driven organization.
  • Experience supporting cloud-hosted applications and infrastructure.
  • Experience with cybersecurity frameworks, security audits, customer security assessments, or compliance activities.
  • Experience developing and testing business continuity and disaster recovery plans.
  • Relevant certifications such as CISSP, CISM, Security+, Microsoft/Azure, AWS, or comparable infrastructure, cloud, cybersecurity, or project management certifications.

Key Performance Expectations: The IT Director is expected to:

  • Maintain secure, reliable, documented, and supportable technology infrastructure.
  • Proactively identify and communicate technology and cybersecurity risks.
  • Ensure critical systems, processes, configurations, and institutional knowledge are appropriately documented and not dependent upon a single individual.
  • Maintain tested backup, recovery, and business continuity capabilities.
  • Establish clear ownership and accountability for critical systems and technology functions.
  • Maintain appropriate controls over company data, systems, administrative accounts, and technology assets.
  • Balance cybersecurity, reliability, functionality, cost, and business needs when making technology recommendations.
  • Build effective relationships across departments and with outside vendors and technology partners.
  • Continuously identify opportunities to improve the technology environment, cybersecurity posture, operational efficiency, and ability to support future growth.
